If I had to pick, for me, Nottingham was so mad they had to take the glasses off the shelves in the bar downstairs cos it was too turnt upstairs which they said had never happened at that venue!
We got the chance to interview the hot new rock and roll outfit ‘The Hunna’ who’s currently on tour around Europe and North America. Check out the interview below:
For the uninitiated, please describe your music in a sentence?
Our music comes from real experiences of 4 guys from Watford, Hertfordshire, experiencing life and turnin’ the fuck up wherever we go.
Good, that saves me a job. I think my favourite track of yours at this point is “Bonfire”, you can’t not get up and go mental to that tune. Do you have a favourite song that you’ve recorded thus far?
Thanks you squadboss! Yeah, that was one of the first songs we ever wrote so for it to have had the impact it has is very special! So far we’re so happy with the songs are sounding, however, ‘Piece by Piece’, which we just recorded, has blown my mind!
What’s your songwriting process like?
Me (Valentino) and BD100 write in his room on ideas together as we always have since the age of 16 then take it to the rehearsal room where IK and Prince put their swag on and we develop it altogether there.
Your gigs have got a reputation for being pretty rowdy. Has there been a venue or city that have left a particularly strong impression on you?
Honestly, it’s been such a roller coaster already since we got released, going to Europe at the beginning of the year was insane and every night in the UK tour was LIT, we’ve waited a long time to be able to do this so we feel so blessed. If I had to pick, for me, Nottingham was so mad they had to take the glasses off the shelves in the bar downstairs cos it was too turnt upstairs which they said had never happened at that venue! Our hometown show in St. Albans was mad as well, the crowd wouldn’t stop singing she’s casual after we finished the set and from the first song there were bodies everywhere!
I see you’re touring the US in the summer! That’s a pretty big step this early. What inspired that and what are your expectations?
Yes! Literally can’t fucking wait to get over and meet the American squad! I’ve never been but always wanted to and we just signed a deal with 300 entertainment over there as their first band so can’t wait to meet the guys at the label there, I think we’re gonna fall in love with the states, hopefully they do with us.
Following on from that tour, do you plan to play a few festivals? I can imagine your tunes making a pretty big impact on the festival audiences.
Thanks very much! And yes we do indeed we have a few festivals lined up this year with some still getting confirmed, Reading and Leeds, Radio 1 big weekend, Live at Leeds, Great Escape Festival, Good for Ears in Paris, we’ve never played at a festival stage so we’re looking forward to the experience.
On the subject of touring and gigging, how do you guys enjoy being on the road? Have you all developed your own quirks and roles?
It’s such a crazy world on the road, it’s hard to explain if you haven’t experienced it which we are still getting used to so it’s quite weird sometimes on where you are, time doesn’t exist and the run down is real but fuck me all the experiences, people you meet and playing every night to fans as dope as ours there’s no feeling like it. We’re so excited to get touring again! We’re a real family on tour it’s sad when it finishes, our tour manager Caroline is now called Hunna Mumma and she is amazing and our driver and tech Sir John Wood Hunna is such an incredible guy, such a real experience with them.
Noting the band name and what I’ve heard across the internet, you’re quite big hip-hop fans. Who’s the greatest rapper of all time and who is your favourite out there at the moment?
Yeah we have a huge hip hop influence, right now I’d say the boy Drake is my favourite and I think he always will be, he blows my mind, all of us are big on drizzy. Best of all time? Drake could be, I’d say Tu Pac.
What other bands and artists influence your sound?
Soooo many different artists, we listen to so much different music, I love Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Aretha then Drake, wiz khalifa, Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Deftones, led Zeppelin, ac/dc, snoop dogg, Free, Foals, Bombay Bicycle Club who we are so sad they’ve stopped for the time being, one of the greatest bands we’ve ever seen.
Obviously the big question is album related… So when can we expect an album and will there be an over arching theme? I guess you can’t really release it until you’re 1Hunna percent happy it’s perfect? Couldn’t resist.
Oooh smooth baby! I am currently sitting on the sofa in the studio listening to a track on the album ‘Alive’ being finished. We’re working on it now and will be out very soon, we’ve had the songs for the album a long time now and knew what it’d be for a while so we can’t wait for the squad to hear them and they’re about parts of our younger years until now and what we’ve experienced and how we’ve grown.
Thanks for your time guys and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for a genuinely thrilling band.
Thank you so much for wanting to know about us and for your support.
