Halfway through, the waves break and we’re finally lifted to the stars, where melody slows down and everything seems far away.

Even in the thick of February, where winter’s climactic number is teetering into the last chorus, grey curtains waiting on each side, we can be blessed with a tune that can take this bleak scene and turn it into a wonderland. Lunch Ladies, ‘Pick Yourself Up’ wastes no time jumping into full speed, opening the door with friendly bass notes and twinkling keys. Crystal cool riffs guide the carefree vocals over drums that dare you to lift your spirit from deep inside the layers of sweaters and scarves. Cynthia’s dreamy delivery comes through as if indifferent to the song’s tempo, like when your head’s in the clouds in the middle of a crowd. Halfway through, the waves break and we’re finally lifted to the stars, where melody slows down and everything seems far away. The track ends with a bow, and we’re left feeling a little lighter.

It’s a time honored tradition to find our summer songs—the ones that get us comfy on that 3-month party plateau— but Lunch Ladies found a more noble cause: the winter jam. This song faces the cold and embraces it, fearlessly. Pick yourself up, we’ve got a long way to go. Fortunately, Lunch Ladies will be there with us. :)
