It’s an expertly crafted track that brings to mind the storytelling Americana of Mark Kozelek but ultimately a confessional that is uniquely Doby Watson alone.
Doby Watson is an American Singer-Songwriter based in Kansas City, Missouri. He released a debut album back in 2009 and has had a few collaborative records released. For me, however, ‘Natural Ice (Early Morning Version)’ is my first exposure to him. It can be a wonderful thing to listen to a well established recording artist with fresh ears and review a new track as a completely stand alone product – not comparing it to any previous work.
So for me, this track is simply beautiful. Starting with a gently picked guitar line that proves to be the foundation of this meandering song, it’s soon followed by Doby’s weathered yet soulful countrified voice spilling words out seemingly as soon as they arrive to him. The song is excellent but it’s the amazingly honest lyrics that make it special. Doby takes self deprecation to the extreme, ‘I’ve been running from myself for so damn long’, and expresses his take on the human condition, ‘there is a darkness that lives in every one of us’.
A few lines into each verse a backing vocal kicks in that really adds some power and further weight to the words and an electric guitar comes along here and there so that the music packs more of a punch. The song closes with the motivating phrase, ‘I wanna be better’ repeated over and over, but somehow your unsure of whether he believes he ever will get better. It’s an expertly crafted track that brings to mind the storytelling Americana of Mark Kozelek but ultimately a confessional that is uniquely Doby Watson’s alone.
