Just how these dudes found each other and managed to put together a super-solid, 90s bent, lo-fi, alt-rock album just blows us away. They literally must be the only cool kids in Cochrane.

If you’ve ever been to Cochrane, Ontario (and believe it or not, I actually have), you’d know that there’s not much there except a polar bear mascot named Chimo, a bunch of dirty, hippy tree planters in the summer (I was once one of those hippies), the local hockey team the Cochrane Crunch and, well, that’s about it. If you’re into your local music scene, checking out new bands at some cool, underground venues, getting smashed on some tasty beers or cocktails while doing so, Cochrane is exactly where you don’t want to be. Now, Cochrane isn’t completely without charm or notoriety. It’s a quaint little town of 5000 or so with a healthy mix of French and English speakers. Tim Horton, the famous hockey player and founder of the disgusting coffee chain that now bears his name was born in Cochrane. Oh! And Sage. Sage is from Cochrane. Who’s Sage you ask? We’d love to tell you. Not only that, but we’d also love to announce the premiere of their newest EP ‘Procrastinate’ on IMN! Just how these dudes found each other and managed to put together a super-solid, 90s bent, lo-fi, alt-rock album just blows us away. They literally must be the only cool kids in Cochrane.

First, check out the video for the first single, ‘Zillion’, off the upcoming EP:

If you’re into it, and we totally are, you may be asking, “OK. OK. So just who is this refreshing cup of cool, fuzzy 90s that’s got serious hints of Nirvana and the Deftones?” Sage is a 3-man band with Eric Pacquet on the drums and lead vocals (always love bands with the lead on drums), Marc Mercier on guitar and vocals and Eric Tremblay on bass and vocals. This is their first EP together and it’s kind of great. Every track on the EP – from the tempo busting, face-shifting opener ‘Sinking Boats’ to the callous attitude of ‘Lukewarm’ – is full of caustic energy that’s so lo-fi and gloomy that you can’t help but throw on your favourite faded Nirvana t-shirt again. There’s just such a deference to 90s grunge going on here. It’s a genre that never seems to wear out even though the knees in your jeans and lining of your black leather jacket have.

In an era where the softening of many genres has become the norm, Sage is the exception. Sage is unafraid to give it to you rough-cut and murky. Sage is just 3 guys who clearly loved bands like Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr. and other gems from the decade that were so instrumental in creating the authenticity of the 90s alt-rock scene. Sage has continued in line and is here today to present to you their premiere EP ‘Procrastinate’ and we’re damn happy to be debuting it on IMN.
